A Holistic Approach to Wellness

Our Wellness program goals are to promote holistic wellness, encompassing physical, emotional, and mental health, provide age-appropriate support and resources at each developmental stage, foster a supportive and inclusive school environment, and equip students with the skills and knowledge to make healthy choices and develop resilience. Our overall program is a collaborative effort between the school counselor, parents and other educators to create an environment that promotes student achievement. This comprehensive wellness program ensures that students at St. Michael's Catholic Preparatory School thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

In the Lower School (PreK-5), we focus on physical wellness through daily physical activities, such as recess and PE classes, which help develop motor skills and promote healthy exercise habits. Nutrition education is integrated into the curriculum, and our cafeteria offers balanced, nutritious meals. Regular health screenings for vision, hearing, and dental care are provided to ensure overall well-being. Emotional wellness is nurtured through Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs like Responsive Classroom and Second Step, which teach emotional intelligence and conflict resolution skills. Daily mindfulness practices, such as breathing exercises and guided imagery, help students manage stress and emotions. Counseling services include individual and group sessions to address personal, social, or academic challenges, as well as parent workshops to support emotional and social development at home.

In the Middle and Upper Schools, student wellness programming is responsive to the needs of adolesence. The Advisory Program provides regular sessions with designated advisors to discuss academic progress and social skill building. The SEL curriculum continues to develop self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Counseling services include full-time counselors available for individuals and groups. Students may drop in or schedule time as needed.

  • Counseling

Experiencing academic, social, emotional, and behavioral challenges is a normal part of growth and development for students. At St. Michael's Prep, two full-time counselors are available throughout the school day to support our community. Our counselors are available to meet with students to provide individual and small group counseling in order to problem solve and discuss friendships, behavioral concerns in the classroom, academic concerns, and other common childhood or teen developmental challenges.  Our counselors work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and administrators to create a positive action plan for students.
  • Advisory Program

The Advisory Program at St. Michael's Prep Middle and Upper School is designed to provide comprehensive support for our students' social, emotional, and academic growth. Each student is assigned to a small group of peers with a dedicated advisor who serves as a trusted adult within the school community.

The Advisory Program is essential to the SMP experience for many reasons:

    1. Social-Emotional Support:
    • Scheduled Advisory Sessions: Advisories meet throughout each week, focusing on building strong interpersonal skills, resilience, and emotional intelligence.
    • Safe Space: Students may share their thoughts and feelings, fostering a supportive and empathetic environment.
    2. Academic Strategies:
    • Personalized Guidance: Advisors help students set academic goals, develop effective study habits, and monitor their progress throughout the year.
    • Resource Connection: Advisors connect students with additional resources, such as tutoring or enrichment opportunities, to support their learning journey.
    3. Trusted Adult Connection:
    • Individualized Support: Regular meetings between students and advisors ensure personalized attention and support.
    • Mentorship: Advisors serve as mentors, providing guidance and encouragement to help students navigate the challenges of middle and upper school.
    4. Parent Communication:
    • Point of Contact: Advisors act as the primary point of contact for parents, addressing questions and concerns promptly and effectively.
    • Regular Updates: Advisors keep parents informed about their child's progress, achievements, and any areas needing attention through regular communication and progress reports.
Our Advisory Program is integral to fostering a nurturing and connected school community at St. Michael's Prep. By prioritizing social-emotional well-being and academic success, we aim to empower our students to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
  • Parent Support

Strong partnerships with parents and families are essential to the success of all St. Michael's Prep students. Parenting support is provided through a number of resources including essential relationships with our outstanding faculty, administrators and staff, parenting workshops and educational trainings regarding valuable topics in child and adolescent growth and development, regular newsletters and communications from grade level teachers, on-going health support & education from our professional campus nursing staff, and personal intervention and education with our counselors & Student Support Staff.
  • Retreats

An invaluable component of developing the whole student in Lower, Middle, and Upper School includes retreat experiences off campus to foster social growth and connection as well as opportunities to celebrate developmental milestones, and deepen student connection to their faith. These retreats are also a unique time to connect with teachers outside of the classroom setting. Through these retreats, students grow in their faith, their ability for self-reflection, improve their leadership and problem solving skills, and deepen their friendships
  • SEL Programming

Embedded in our holistic approach to student growth and development is Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Skills like self-awareness, self-management, and responsible decision making are central to the success of all students and great care is taken to further strengthen these skills in each of the students we support. Additionally, our classroom teachers employ innovative teaching practices like project-based learning, service learning, and design thinking to differentiate their instruction and to foster a growth mindset in our students. This integrated approach motivates our students to take ownership of their learning while solving real-world problems. These authentic connections give meaning to academic content and drive student achievement.
